Global warming and greenhouse gasses are not sexy. Puppies are.

For Blog Action Day, I was planning a "Top 10 environmental pinups" post. I was planning on addressing 10 different environmental issues through pinups. Well… I just couldn't find them.

Throughout their short history, Pinups have been recruited for many purposes: The troops, advertising, post-modern art and many other strange causes. But when it comes to the environment, pinups, apparently, only endorse what looks good on them.

Things That Look Good on Pinups
What looks good on pinups? Puppies and organic fashion! So we can find:
  • The fabulous Pinups For Pups. An independent association of animal rescuers.
  • The stylish Enamore. A fashion label that produces retro fashion from organic and sustainable fabrics.
  • And of course PETA (People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals), who's campaigns against fur are, by now, legendary. My favorites being the Anna Nichole Smith and Charlotte Ross campaigns, that savor some of the sweet and humorous attitudes of the 50's.

However, if you take a peak at the Wikipedia List of Environmental Issues, you'll notice that there are so many other issues to be addressed. It seems that pinup artists find pinups suitable only for the light and cute and there is an obvious shortage of cheesecake in the "less sexy" sectors of the environmental conversation.

One Needle in the Whole Hay Stack
I did manage to find one needle in this hay stack that deals with global warming: Ecobabes are a group of women that care for the environment, who issued a pinup calendar with the overall goal "to make climate protection visible, talked about, and attractive". And although it's a great initiative, it doesn't have that retro look and feel, I'm after.

You Can Make It Better
There are two good things that came out of this hopeless search for environmentally aware pinups:
  1. I got off my ass and did something for the environment, my way. Check out the first Tree hugging pinup at The Pinup Shop.
  2. I'm proposing, pinups start lavishing their appeal on the less sexy issues. So If you're a pinup artist/ photographer/ model and you got an environmentally related pinup to share, post her here, in the comments section or at the Pinup Facebook group and feel free to link to your own site.

  3. For more environmentally aware pinups,
