Sexual art is usually underground or very niched. Because of this, artists throw all inhibition away and correct the politically incorrect. There are no holly cows in the pinup business, just beautiful pinup girls (and boys) of all shapes, sizes and sexes.

Hard to find but worth the effort

It's true that if you do a Google search of the term “male pinups” you wouldn't get much of that retro beefcake fun. Not to mention the poor results on “African American pinups”. But if you look deep and maybe throw in a couple of names, you will find Dorothy Dandridge and a handful of naked men (not together! ;) )

Sexual art (A.K.A. “pornography”) has never been subjected to the cultural snob's censorship. What's the point? Smut is smut, right?

Wrong! As the definition for pornography changes through time and place, so does its audience. The internet is a great place to understand these trends.

Pinup trends of diversity
African American's seem to be totally uninterested in the rehashing of pinup art. Not surprising considering the time and place. Appart from Dorothy Dandridge, there seem to be no more glamor shots, from the 40's and 50's, of African American Women.

Asian American pinup models can be scarcely found (in correlation to the rising popularity of Asian models in pornography), such as the astonishingly voluptuous Masuimi Max, top model for Pinup Girl Clothing.

Does size matter?
With out a doubt! In the pinup world, there is always room for more. Doesn't take a genius to figure out Marilyn Monroe isn't a size 6!
For the classic pinup lovers there is Duane Bryers' over-weight Hilda. A beautifully drawn fat, perky redhead, that proves that it's all about good art. If you're looking for modern plump pinups, try The Toil Girls of Les Toil. Toil does a great job in the name of diversity. In the site you will find black, brown, white or Asian models, all fat, all beautiful.

Manly Men
Well, we can definitely debate on that point ;) , but one thing is for sure, male pinups used to be almost as fun as their female counterparts. Flickr is a great source for vintage male pinup photos. For those of you looking for the modern version of male pinups, you may be a little disappointed (just like those of you looking for retro beauties in todays Playboy magazine). It seems the fun and games have been sucked out of male pornography and traded in for overly serious and overly pumped boys. I did, however, manage to find one photographer, on Slide, that exhibited some of that ole' rockabilly humor.

Girlie Girls
The biggest twist in retro pinup art, probably only really accrued this year, when two gorgeous ladies decided to make a homo-erotic pinup style photo shoot and display it on LiveJournal. Breaking stereotypes of “butch dykes” (pardon my French ;) ) and showing us all that lesbians are pinups, too. You might say lesbian pinups have been there since Betty Page, but not the type you can imagine Elvegren painting ;)
As pinups are getting more fashionable, their diversity conforms to main-stream fantasy. We can only hope that it wouldn't be down to the anorexic blond, the heroine chick brunette or the barely there redhead.
